I’m a proponent of good communication, whether it’s in my personal relationships or my work for One Call Now, a telecommunications notification provider. However, I’m also a protective mama bear so when I received a heads up about social media sites such as Facebook geo-tagging my photos and what that could mean for the privacy and safety of my child I had to share.
So, let’s take this one step at a time… What do I mean about geo-tagging and what is the danger? Well, watch this YouTube video from 2010 for a great explanation and example. The bottom line is that unless you disable the GPS locator on your smartphone camera, the pictures you take and post online carry that location information with them. This allows anyone online to see where the pictures were taken… the park where your kids play, your home address, etc. For more up to date information on disabling your GPS on an iPhone or Android, this video from Wired is short and great.
